The Medici Donor Program originated in 2001 when the inspired idea of putting the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from New York on Cottesloe Beach was about to fall through due to Festival budget constraints.
The $25,000 needed to make it happen, just wasn't there. Freelance journalist, author and dance critic David Hough happened to hear about this and asked for 24 hours to see if he could find the money to put the event back onto the program. He got on the phone and 24 hours later, 25 individuals had pledged $1,000 each to make sure the event could go ahead. 8,000 people enjoyed an experience of surreal beauty while the sun set on the Indian Ocean.
The following year, two very energetic and devoted Festival-goers, Mack and Evelyn Hall, spearheaded and expanded the group to support another Cottesloe Beach event - France's most celebrated shadow theatre company, Amoros & Augustin.
The program has gained momentum and each year the Medici Donors make a generous donation toward a selected Festival event:
2012, A Magic Flute
2010, The Walworth Farce
2008, Black Watch
2007, Propellers: Shakespeare's Comedies
2006, Isabella's Room
2005, Playboy of the Western World
2004, 12 Angry Men
In 2009 the Medici Donors were presented with a Giving Award from Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) in recognition of the significant contribution they make to the Festival. Since the program's inception in 2001, Medici Donors have contributed almost $300,000 to support ambitious, innovative and challenging international works.
Medici Donors contribute $1,500 to each Festival. $1,250 of the gift is a tax-deductible donation and $250 can be used for tickets to the Festival.
Medici Donors have the opportunity to purchase tickets to Festival Parties where they enjoy the opportunity to mingle with artists and fellow donors and corporate partners. They are recognised in Festival promotional material, website and annual report.
Joining the Medici donors not only helps to support the Festival in making our community a culturally vibrant one, but provides members personally with an inside experience of what a Festival is; a time to feel big feelings, think big thoughts - ultimately a time of inspiration that makes our lives richer.
