Philip Glass Complete Piano Etudes

Performed by Philip Glass, Maki Namekawa and Sally Whitwell

Sat 16 Feb 2013

WORLD PREMIERE/AUSTRALIAN EXCLUSIVE

Philip Glass has been at the forefront of modern music for over half a century and since 1994 he has been on a deeply personal odyssey of solo piano exploration.

Experience the fascinating evolution of Glass’ compositions, and playing style, on stage in this world premiere of all 20 Etudes – the final three commissioned by Perth Festival.

This is a landmark musical occasion.

Complete Piano Etudes showcases the variety of colour, form and style possible on the instrument, immersing you in Glass’ hypnotically drifting soundscapes – at once delicate and monumental, sultry and melancholy.

In this special performance of three parts, Glass is joined by pianists Maki Namekawa and Sally Whitwell.

Long-time collaborator Japanese pianist Maki Namekawa has established herself as a standout interpreter of Philip Glass’ music and Australian pianist Sally Whitwell’s performance of his work won her the coveted ARIA for Best Classical Album in 2011.

This extraordinary Perth Festival performance, celebrating and unveiling work by one of the defining composers of our time is truly a once in a lifetime event.

The 18th, 19th and 20th Etudes (from Complete Piano Etudes) are commissioned by Medici Donors and Griffiths Architects for the Perth International Arts Festival.
